FlinterFile: Mother’s Finest- Piece Of The Rock

mother's finest- piece of rock

In 1978, Mother’s Finest released one of their few hits. The group was founded by Joyce ‘Baby Jean’ Kennedy and Glenn ‘Doc’ Murdock, and they made a special mix of funk and rock. Their first single (Fire) was a small hit in the US, but the big success (in Europe) came with the song Baby Love. They became a regular act on several festivals, and their song Piece Of The Rock became a hit in especially the Netherlands, where it charted at number 7. Enjoy

Song of the day: Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson- A Real Mother For Ya

johnny guitar watson a real mother for ya

Number 41 in the US, number 44 in the UK. Johnny Watson was around for a long time, in the fifties he was a vocalist, pianist and guitarist, and he created a special sound with his style of playing a guitar. He was a guest on a Frank Zappa album in the seventies, and at the end of the seventies he changed his style. This song is one of these songs that fit in his changed style: he was now a funk artist. Song of the day: Negrocan- Cada Vez

negrocan cada vez

Our story of today starts in 1991, when a group of several artists is formed. The artists come from different countries, namely Italy, England, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil. They name themselves  Negrocan. Their style has some funk in it, but also the clear inspiration of Latin and some soul. That combines in a single, Cada Vez, which is still played a lot during the summer. Enjoy

Song of the day: Timex Social Club- Rumors

Rumors timex social club

Yes, this group was a one-hit wonder! Finally found a real one. They made one album, had one big hit and then it stopped… Maybe the Rumors catched up with them and made them break up. Fact is, that in the eighties, this was a real hit. It has some influences from the R&B and funk, but I wouldn’t call it a record in one of these sectors. What it is, I don’t know. A good record!
