In 1971, Ten Years After officially released the single of the song I’m Going Home. This song was already on the album Undead from 1968, and in 1969, they played it on Woodstock. This ment their breakthrough, and it became a big hit. The name of the group refers to the years Elvis Presley had his first successes. Ten years later, the band established their name, resulting in Ten Years After (though they were already working in the bussiness for some years). Enjoy

FlinterFile: Pacific Gas And Electric- Are You Ready?

In 1970, Pacific Gas & Electric recorded their only song that made the charts. John Hill wrote the song together with drummer and the later singer Charlie Allen, and made quite some references to gospel: the first line is a reference to Matthew 24:4, there’s a reference to a sort of gospel song and a classic riddle… all together it brought them to number 14 in the charts, a spot they would never make again. The band dissolved in 1973. Enjoy

In 1955, Robert Charles Guidry, better known as Bobby Charles, recorded the song Later Alligator. It was a blues song with a melody which came from the song Later For You Baby by Guitar Slim. Bill Haley & his Comets took the song, made it more of an uptempo song and recorded it in New York in 1955. The song was featured in their movie Rock Around The Clock in 1956, and therefore the song also reached number 6 in the US. The song would be the last big hit for Bill Haley. Enjoy

Song of the day: Muddy Waters- Mannish Boy

For the origins of this song, we have to go back to the song Hoochie Coochie Man, which was written by Willie Dixon and sung by Muddy Waters. The song got a reply by Bo Diddley, called I’m Your Man. Both the first and the second song got the melody line which was used in Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters. No need explaining that this song was a reply to the song by Diddley. The song was recorded in 1955, and reached number 5 in the R&B chart of the US. Enjoy

Song of the day: Elvis Presley- That’s All Right

In 1954, Elvis Presley recorded and released his first single ever: That’s All Right. The song was not written by him, because the original was made by Arthur Crudup, a blues singer. He already recorded it in 1946. Some parts of the text even date back to another song, which was made in 1926! The song was re-released in 1949, now on a new format: the 45 rpm single. This particular single was coloured bright orange, if you want to know. Elvis played the song in a break, speeded up the tempo and when the other musicians joined in, his first single was born. The song was played on a radio show, and again, and again… it never charted, though it sold 20000 copies. Enjoy

Wow! This woman has got real power in her voice, and still, she can sing such nice things (I just wanna make love to you), and then she gets angry again. The music behind it suggests all: this is real R&B by a real black woman (there’s difference in the voices, or at least: they believed that in the fifties and sixties). Enjoy:

Sometimes you hear a song which grabs you: you know that you find it very good, you want to know more! I had that one, two weeks ago when listening to the radio. I heard a (relatively) new song on the radio, it was the first time I heard it, and I thought: wow! This is it. This is going to be a hit, and I want his album. It stopped there, there was no album… not yet.
So you start googling around: more music by this artist, where does he get his inspiration from, etc, etc, etc.

I found his YouTube-channel, listened to the songs that were on there, and decided to buy his album as soon as it was there.

The strange thing about his music is that it is new, but it is familiar, too. It has to do with the influences. Jazz, blues, Nat King Cole, to mention a few.
Those are the things I know. Those are the things I like. And the saxophones in his songs, I like those, too.

To give him an extra impulse (which he maybe doesn’t need), I give the honour of the song of the day to his song Vandaag. Because it was the first thing I heard of him. And because I hope he will make a lot of good music in future. And that he will make a record on CD, since I don’t download…

An album which amazed me. I can’t say it otherwise. The first time I heard it, I thought like: Wow!
The part which amazed me a bit was the kind of mix between rock and blues.
And, like I have said the last days as well, my favourite song is the title track…
That’s also because of the great intro this song has. Oh yes,
