FlinterFile: Jenny Arean & Frans Halsema- Vluchten Kan Niet Meer
This song comes from a musical, written by Annie M.G. Schmidt (writer from many children books, like Jip and Janneke). The musical, ‘En nu naar bed’ (And now off to bed), was played in 1971. Originally, there was a happy end to it, but as Annie M.G. Schmidt thought that wouldn’t fit, she moved this song to the end of the musical, giving it a more fatalistic ending. The song, in English ‘fleeing is impossible now’, tells the story of two people who don’t know where to flee to now. The situation is quite depressing, as everything will end with a ‘supersonic boom’. The song became popular in 1977, as it was played a lot on the radio then, possibly of the political situation, and the song made to number 19 in the Netherlands. Enjoy
