In 2000, Mark Knopfler released his solo album Sailing to Philadelphia.The title track, which he sings together with James Taylor, was based on a novel. This novel, written by Thomas Pynchon and called Mason & Dixon, tells the story of the two Englishmen who established the border which separates the Northern and Southern United States. In the song, Mark Knopfler takes on the role of Dixon and James Taylor is Mason, who are sailing from the UK to America. Mason doesn’t believe there to be a “land of oppertunity” to the west, while Dixon does. At the end of the song, Dixon is proven to be wrong… Enjoy
