FlinterFile: Joan Baez- The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
In 1971, Joan Baez covered a song which was originally recorded by the Band. The song was written by Robbie Robertson and is about the American Civil War. He first had written the music and then started writing the lyrics, inspired by the saying ‘The South will rise again’. From his research of the Civil War, he wrote a song. A ‘dixie’ is a South, who was defeated by the Union Army. Joan Baez recorded it in Nashville, with twenty persons in the studio to sing the chorus. It was her biggest hit: number 6 in the UK and number 3 in the US. Enjoy
